Only 27% chargesheets filed out of 3,005 registered UAPA cases in 2016-18; MHA tells Rajya Sabha

According to the written data provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in the Rajya Sabha, 3,005 cases were registered under the UAPA act in 2016-18, against 821 chargesheets filed, indicating that the only 27% investigations were able to conclude.

The Government has informed Parliament that cases registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) have increased since 2016, while the number of chargesheets filed in these cases has remained very poor.

MoS (Home) G Kishan Reddy, while replying to a question on UAPA cases, told Rajya Sabha that a total of 232 chargesheets were filed in 2016, 272 in 2018, and 317 in 2018.

The accused arrested under the UAPA act find it difficult to get bail from a court. Reddy also informed the Rajya Sabha that around 123 UAPA cases in 2017, and 62 in 2018 remained pending for investigation for more than one year.
