As PM Narendra Modi renames the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards to Major Dhyan Khel Ratna Awards on Friday, Let's have a look into the life of Major Dhyan Chand, the greatest hockey player ever born. The man who impressed Hitler. German führer Adolf Hitler even offered him a senior post in the German Army after witnessing Major's splendid performance against Germany in the 1936 Olympics final. Every year on 29 August, the birth anniversary of Dhyan Chand is celebrated as National Sports Day in memory of his extraordinary life.
Major's extraordinary goal-scoring feats earned him the title of magician for his superb ball control. His significant contribution in the field of hockey helped India bag three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. This extraordinary spell paved the way for the golden era of Men’s Hockey in India, notably around 1928 to 1964, as India bagged gold medals in 7 out of 8 Olympics.
The government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in 1956. His contribution to hockey and in the field of sports in India is still very much remembered to this day.
On his birth anniversary, i.e. on National Sports Day, Arjuna and Khel Ratna awards are conferred by the president of India to celebrate the achievements of exceptional athletes in the country. From this year onwards, the Khel Ratna Awards will be given in his name to the sportspersons in India, taking the prestige of the Khel Ratna Awards to new heights.
