Woman beheaded, 2 others dead in an alleged knife attack near a church in French city of Nice
French Police on Thursday morning said that 3 people have died and several others have been injured by an alleged attacker with a knife in the French city of Nice. Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi described the heinous attack as terrorism. Some reports also claim that a woman has been beheaded by the alleged attacker near Norte Dame church in the city. French politician Marine Le Pen also spoke of a decapitation having occurred in the attack.
France's anti-terrorism prosecutor's department has launched an investigation into the attack.
Nice City Mayor Christian Estrosi took to his Twitter handle and said that the alleged knife attack had happened in or near the city's Norte Dame church. The French police authorities have also detained the attacker, according to the Mayor.
The Mayor also told reporters that, while the Police were detaining the alleged attacker, he kept shouting 'Allahu Akbar'.
The alleged terror attack comes at a time when France is already mourning the beheading earlier this month of French middle school teacher Samuel Paty in Paris by a man of Chechen origin. The attacker had beheaded the high school teacher for allegedly showing caricatures of Prophet Muhammad to his pupils during a civics class.
